Welcome :)

Hello and welcome to my humble blog:)

My name is Daniela and I’m a 17 year old schoolgirl living in Zagreb, Croatia. Besides being a typical high school student, I have a passion for animals, movies, music and good food (only eating – I cant cook to save my life). In my short spare time I have between after school activities and studying, i can usually be found out with my friends or being bitten by our evil black pet cat.

I enjoy reading, Christmas time and going to the movies – its almost like therapy to me – and usually find it very difficult to introduce myself. Well, that’s pretty much the basic information about me in a nutshell.

Here’s what Korina Rus, a former attendant of BHV’s High school year abroad program had to say about her experience:

“ Everybody’s seen the typical Hollywood movies about such programs and to me, they’ve always seemed like a lot of fun. I  love to travel and I always wanted to attend a program like that, so for my third year of high school I thought “Why not try it out?” It was sort of a now-or-never decision. There was no way my parents would let me go in 4. grade because of the Matura exam and after that I was going to go off to university, so it was either third year or not at all…I did some on-line searching and came across BHV and the great thing was that the application form was available right there on their page…The whole process was actually really simple. After I sent in the form they contacted me and arranged an interview. Because I wanted to go Portugal, the interview was in Portuguese, but that obviously varies depending on where you want to study. There was also a girl there who had already attended the program to tell me about her experience and answer any questions I had. I brought all of my documents and papers and within a week I was informed that I had been accepted. At first I was a bit scared because it was the first time I was leaving my family for so long, but my foster family in Portugal was so amazing that they treated me like I was their own daughter. They took good care of me and I became very close to them and their children. School was also very fun. Portuguese schools are very different to Croatian schools, but the teachers were very helpful and I didn’t have any problems. I made a lot of new friends and learnt a lot of new things. The culture, the people, the food...everything was fantastic! The people were so open and simple, it’s a whole different and amazing world compare to what I was used to back home. By the end of the program, I was sad to leave because I had fallen in love with everything and everyone there. I loved it so much that I’ve been back twice! And I still keep in touch with my friends and family from Portugal, I feel like it’s my home away from home…and to think that I was worried before leaving that I wasn’t going to fit in! It turned out to be such a beautiful and memorable experience… if somebody’s considering doing something like this or taking a course but isn’t sure yet, I recommend it wholeheartedly! I think everybody should have a experience like this, it was really life changing and eye-opening for me! I learned so much about the my favorite country and made some friends for life. It really doesn’t compare to the movies, it’s an unique and one-in-a-lifetime experience...I’m going to remember it for the rest of my life!
